Formica Countertops Have Much More To Offer

Formica is often thought of as an industry term for laminate countertops just like Kleenex is used as a way to ask for tissues.  They aren't necessarily thought of as just brand names.

Formica countertops have much more to offer than just laminate.  They offer a wide variety of products that can be just as attractive, and a lot less expensive, than some of the natural or solid surface countertops out there.

Formica countertops are now offered as solid surface, wood veneer, and metal countertops in addition to the traditional laminate.

The solid surface countertops are non-porous so they are durable, resistant to stains, heat, and bacteria. They are easy to care for and easy to maintain.  Simple wiping with mild soap and warm water will keep it clean.  For tougher stains, you can use stronger detergents, or bleach, then wipe clean.  However, you should avoid cleaners with acid in them, for example, to clean tile or ceramic stove tops.

If your countertop has a matte finish, you can even use abrasives to clean the stain.  While the Formica countertop is resistant to heat and scratches, you should be sure to use hotpads and cutting boards when appropriate.  They are available in a variety of colors and styles to fit any kitchen.

Wood veneer surfaces are available in modern, traditional, and even exotic styles.  It is made by laminating real wood to a phenolic core.  Since it is made from real wood, there will be color and pattern variations.  This will give a more natural look to your table or other surface.  Formica does not recommend using this option for high-use countertops as they can be damaged easily.  If you did choose this as your Formica countertop, you would have to be extremely careful not to scratch, gouge, or damage the surface.

Formica countertops are also available in metal laminates and solid metals.  These countertops are created by applying a decorative metal foil face onto a high pressure phenolic laminate.  They are protected by an anodized or lacquer finish.  Again, these surfaces are not necessarily recommended for use as a countertop because of the possibility that they will be damaged.  It is intended for light duty or vertical applications.

Traditional laminate Formica countertops are by far the best known, easy to care for, and economical option.  Formica laminate shouldn’t be overlooked!  There is a trend to move toward more expensive countertop options, but there is something to be said about economy and durability.  There are laminates now being produced that look like the more popular choices of granite, marble, and other stone.

These countertops can give you the beauty and functionality, without the added maintenance of real stone countertop surfaces.  Laminate countertops are easy to keep clean and easy to repair in most instances.  Keep in mind that they are not indestructible though!  Normal care should be taken not to use the countertop as a cutting board, and the use of hotpads is always a good idea as very hot pans could melt the plastic.

With proper care and maintenance, your Formica countertop can stay beautiful for years to come!
