Advantages and
Disadvantages Of Corian Countertops
Corian
countertops
are solid surface countertops that are produced by DuPont.
Corian
is considered a high-end product and can be expensive, around $50 to
$75 per square foot. However, consumers should be aware that
it
has its advantages and its disadvantages.
If you have
a Corian
countertop, backsplash, and sink, they can be made to give the
appearance that it is all one solid surface. This look and
feel
is appealing to most consumers. It prevents dirt and grime from getting
in the cracks between the different surfaces.
Corian
countertops are
easy to clean, and they are not affected by chemicals in common
household cleaners. You should still avoid harsh cleaners or
chemicals like oven cleaners. They are also resistant to
stains
as they are non-porous. To keep your countertop looking its
best,
you should clean the countertop and then dry it completely.
This
will keep water stains from dulling the countertop finish.
With
proper cleaning, Corian countertops also resist mold, mildew, and
bacteria.
Corian
countertops are
made using acrylic or plastic as a solid surface, so if they are
damaged, they can be repaired depending on the type of
damage.
Minor scratches can be buffed out using a special cleaning pad pretty
easily. Very fine scratches can be rubbed away with a cleaner
like Soft Scrub. More detailed instructions to removing
scratches
and cuts can be found on DuPont’s website.
Because it
is man-made,
Corian countertops come in a variety of colors and patterns –
over 100 different colors to be exact. So finding the perfect
color to match your kitchen is no problem.
The main
drawback to
Corian countertops is that they are not heat resistant.
Because
they are made of plastic, they can scorch easily beyond
repair.
To avoid burn marks, use hotpads or other protective surfaces between
your countertop and hot pan. You should also run cold water
over
hot pans, or in the sink, before putting a hot pan into your Corian
solid surface sink to prevent damage.
People are
becoming more
conscious of our ecosystem and how we care for the
environment.
Considering that Corian countertops are man-made from plastics, they
are not eco-friendly.
Some would
say that
because Corian countertops are synthetic, they don’t compare
to
the quality and appeal of natural surfaces like stone.
Over time,
Corian
countertops require more frequent cleaning to maintain their finish and
color. Darker colors seem to need more attention than lighter
colors. The appearance of the finish on the countertop will
likely change, even with proper care. Refurbishing can be
done by
the owner.
Personally,
I have a
Corian countertop, backsplash, and sink in my kitchen. I have
had
it for several years and have not had any damage, but I have been very
careful to take good care of it. I haven't put anything hot
on
the countertop, and I always use a cutting board. Actually, a
cutting surface that matches my countertop came with it. I
have
had some stains and scratches in my sinks, but they have been very easy
to remove. I have been pleased with my Corian countertop and
would choose one again.
